Taylor Swift’s Back with a Vengeance

August 21, 2012

Last time I’ve looked up Taylor Swift was when I discovered that she’s singing two songs for the movie The Hunger Games. The eerie looking music video of the song Safe and Sound (which  features The Civil Wars) fits the scene of Rue dying in the arms of Katniss to a T, like telling her, “Time to rest little one, you don’t have to suffer anymore.” The other song “Eyes Open”, which wasn’t included in the film but is listed on the soundtrack album, talks about Katniss’ relationship with the Capitol.

Months later, the lead single of her upcoming fourth album “Red” is widely talked about on Twitter.

The Latest (Post)Breakup Anthem

Once or twice in our lives we have that someone or have been someone who begged to get back together with our ex-boyfriend or girlfriend. Check out the song’s lyric video below:

This catchy pop song talks about the frustration that you yourself or someone else feels in such situations. Released last August 14, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” *whew, that was long* is a departure from the singer’s country music style.

The Lyrics

Taylor Swift We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together

I remember when we broke up the first time
Saying, “This is it, I’ve had enough,” ’cause like
We hadn’t seen each other in a month
When you said you needed space. (What?)
Then you come around again and say
“Baby, I miss you and I swear I’m gonna change, trust me.”
Remember how that lasted for a day?
I say, “I hate you,” we break up, you call me, “I love you.”

Oooh we called it off again last night
But oooh, this time I’m telling you, I’m telling you

We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

Like, ever…

I’m really gonna miss you picking fights
And me, falling for it screaming that I’m right
And you, would hide away and find your peace of mind
With some indie record that’s much cooler than mine

Oooh, you called me up again tonight
But oooh, this time I’m telling you, I’m telling you

We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me (talk to me)
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

Oooh yeah, oooh yeah, oooh yeah
Oh oh oh

I used to think that we were forever ever
And I used to say, “Never say never…”
Huh, so he calls me up and he’s like, “I still love you,”
And I’m like… “I just… I mean this is exhausting, you know, like,
We are never getting back together. Like, ever”

No!

We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

We are not getting back together,
We oh, not getting back together

You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me (talk to me)
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

Feedback

Overall the song received mixed reactions. For me, as a Taylor Swift fan for the beginning of her career, I support the musical transition.

Just because someone is good at one thing (in her case: country music), doesn’t mean that person can’t try to explore other options and be good at it too. Versatility is important nowadays, for artists, because people get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

The song is only one of the 16 songs in the upcoming album, so let’s not be quick to judge.

What do you think of Taylor Swift’s new song? Can you relate? Which line did struck you most? 🙂

  1. Is the song “Back in December” a Taylor Swift song? I’m not quite familiar with her songs, I need to ask my kids about her.

    1. I have read that some people didn’t like the song. We cannot please everybody though. For me the song will be a hit, since a lot of people can relate to it 🙂

  2. wow! I like the song! Its cute.. and her picture above is cute. your right, versatility is important for artists. 🙂

  3. The song is meant for the broken-hearted and how to move on. My niece always listen to her song but I think she is too young for this one.

    1. I must say I’m a bit ‘disturbed’ that most songs people younger than me listen to are fit for those in my age group and older.

  4. At first, I didn’t really appreciate the song because it sounded like a whole different Taylor. I’m a huge fan, you see. But the song eventually grew on me because it’s so catchy. It got stuck in my head for days. 😀 Have you heard Tyler Ward’s cover for it?
