Things I Learned About 3D Printing and CIM Technologies

How about a scale model?

CIM Technologies, a leading distributor of 3D printers in the Philippines, held a very informative mini bloggers day last February 21.

3D Printing, an innovative technology also known as Additive Manufacturing, refers to the production of three-dimensional solid objects directly from a digital plan, where the material (in the form of PLA plastic, clay, wax, wood-based filament nylon, etc.) is ‘printed’ layer by layer in variations until it gets the form.

The aim is to produce conceptual / functional prototypes or end-use parts/products for personal consumption or for low volume production. It is not a substitute for volume production manufacturing.

This thirty (30) year-old technology started in what was called stereolithography is a game changer in industrial design (architecture, engineering and construction), medicine, automotive, education, fashion, food and more! In the Philippines, it was introduced in 2007.

One of the hottest buzzwords and newest trend in the market today is making its way into our consumer market. For creatives, CIM Technologies offer two Personal 3D printers: the Cube®, the home printer for you and CubeX™, the printer for Professionals and Educators.

Cube® and CubeX™ can print as big as 5.5″x5.5″x5.5″ and 10.8″x10.45″x9.5″ respectively. Choose a color to print with Cube®. If you need two or three different ones, CubeX™ Duo or CubeX™ Trio will take care of it. Both are plug and play devices. Their professional 3D printers, ProJet® x60 series, which is mostly used by multinational companies comes in four variants: ProJet 360, ProJet 460 Plus, ProJet 660 Pro and ProJet 860 Pro.

Don’t worry about the design because there are templates downloadable online. For designers or consumers who do or don’t have printers, they can monetize/buy designs or end products on online marketplaces such as Shapeways, Thingiverse or Etsy.

But if you really want to create your own customized design but don’t have the skills, the company also offers 100% hands-on trainings and internationally recognized certifications through Stanford IT Learning with offices located in Makati and Ortigas. Expect the best from the Autodesk Training and Certification Center, Primavera representative and Siemens solution partner.

With its commitment to share the knowledge of technology, CIM conducts a series of events nationwide such as campus tours, workshops, seminars and trade shows to showcase the integrated solutions for design and innovation.

My Thoughts:

For someone who is currently taking up a class in Modeling and Simulation, I find this technology very fascinating. I know art is not one of my strengths but I’m curious what I can come up with if ever we get to do this instead of the usual web and graphic design.

Filipinos are very creative but we lack the resources. We don’t even have a Maker’s space in the country! (It is said that a UP professor is thinking of putting up one soon.) Now, through CIM, we are gaining access to technology that will enable us to further develop our creativity.

Anyone here tried 3D printing? If you haven’t, what will your first printout be? =)
