Gathered at the Liwasang Bonifacio, the tour started with a short lecture by our guide, Sir Lawrence Chan, Vice President of Filipinas Stamp Collectors’ Club. It is then followed by a short introduction of each participant.
Liwasang Bonifacio was formerly known as Plaza Lawton. It was renamed after Andres Bonifacio, whose bronze statue is standing in front of the post office.
A little background about the Club and the tour:
The club was formed in 1994 and the country’s premier group for beginners and seasoned philatelist (or simply stamp collectors). Amid the advancement of communication and slowly forgotten snail mails and telegraph (yes, there are people who still use this), the club actively promotes stamp collecting in the country through various projects and awareness campaigns such as this walking tour, seminars and exhibits.
The Postal Heritage Walking Tour is organized every third Sunday of the month for free, no strings attached. Every walking tour is different from one another, except going to the Manila Central Post Office and Metropolitan Theater. The participants decided how fast or slow the tour will go, to cover more places if they wished to.
Before going inside the Manila Central Post Office, we took a group photo in front of Bonifacio’s statue. Pardon me if I don’t have a copy, I haven’t seen it tagged in the Filipinas Stamp Collectors’ Club page. I do have photos of the plaza.
