Independent theater collective The People Diary is set to stage Unheard Voices: Original Monologues, an innovative production that challenges traditional Philippine stage readings with bold storytelling and loud visuals. While most local readings stick to a familiar formula of black outfits and minimalist setups, Unheard Voices brings a refreshing burst of color and theatrical spectacle to the scene.
Premiering on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at Kontempo Community Studio in Ayala Malls Circuit Makati, the one-day show marks an exciting debut for the collective and its lineup of independent artists.
Six Ghosts, One Halloween Party
The narrative premise immediately sets an intriguing tone: six ghosts gather for a Halloween party, unraveling the lived experiences, struggles, and untold stories of their past lives.
Instead of stark, uniform attire, the performers will deliver these monologues in loud, colorful costumes. By infusing the production with spectacle and paying tribute to drag as an art form of creative resilience, self-expression, and identity exploration, Unheard Voices transforms what could have been a somber exercise in remembrance into an energetic theatrical celebration.
Fresh Voices Outside the Mainstream
What makes Unheard Voices particularly compelling is its lineup of writers. Directed by Prof. Romualdo “Ronie” M. Protacio, a seasoned educator and cultural worker with four decades in Philippine performing arts, the show presents raw, un-workshopped scripts written purely from a passion for storytelling:
- Miguel Louie B. de Guzman (Laguna-raised development worker and UP Diliman MA student)
- Mavs Alviar (Dramaturg and performance maker from San Pedro, Laguna)
- Ann Figueroa (TV composer and music producer scoring for GMA Network)
- Dr. Ella Mae Masamayor (Internal medicine specialist, essayist, and medical podcaster)
- Catherine Orda (Writer and editor with work published across major newsrooms)
- Janelle Capiral (Communications strategist and creative space holder)
- Myra Ho (Portrait artist, writer, and former corporate finance professional)
Co-presented by Kontempo Community Studio, Ayala Circuit Makati, and Ayala Foundation Inc., the initiative offers a refreshing stage for voices outside typical commercial circuits.
