PhilCare Wellness Index: ironic facts on Pinoy health

By on November 3, 2014

FACT: While many Filipinos generally feel good about their health, they might not be as healthy as they think. We admit to self-medication, which is a very dangerous habit. There’s also a tendency to be mindful about our well-being only when start to get sick. And oh, we seem to be a lack in prevention of diseases.

How ironic, is it? These are just some of the many fresh findings affirmed by PhilCare Wellness Index. Top HMO provider in the Philippines, PhilCare, commissioned Dr. Fernando Paragas, a Filipino professor at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He came up with an Index that is comparable to those of New Zealand (Sovereign Well-Being Index), Canada (Index of Well-Being), the US (Gallup-Healthways Well-Being 5), and Australia (Alere Wellness Index). This aims to measure and uncover the Filipinos’ sense of well-being. Wellness includes one’s physical, nutritional, medical, lifestyle, psychological, vices, and sex.

One Friday evening I was out with friends for dinner and movies when I felt very sharp pain in my abdomen area. I woke up the next day sweating because I had a fever. I didn’t want to back out so I still went to an inauguration event. I barely ate, taking refuge in Friggies EGG, Marie biscuits and water for the rest of the day. Back home I was resting then I suddenly felt heaving. After that, I was alternating between sleep, drinking water, making ORS for myself and trips to the loo. I was already suspecting it was gastroenteritis. Sunday I stayed at home and kept myself rehydrated. By Monday, the symptoms were gone.PhilCare-Wellness-Box-card

Like many people today, I work as a consultant, thus I do not have access to typical employee benefits including HMO. Work, attending events and commuting can be stressful. Instead of binge drinking or chain smoking and damaging my body, I manage stress by resting, playing arcade or computer games, talking with my friends, listening to music and watching TV series. My only form of exercise is walking.

I admit that I also self-medicate by letting my body fight the disease on its own, coupled with lots of rest and water. I was never admitted to a hospital (even on bouts of horrible flu). I’m trying to eliminate taking medicine. I’m also guilty of binge or excessive eating, which comes from reviewing food almost every other day, but I’m learning to manage my share. Luckily I eat vegetables and fruits so it’s easy for me to trade meat. I’m also a green tea drinker. It also helps that I can now afford to buy good food, not anymore limited to cheap, processed food.

With that said, it isn’t enough. Health is wealth. Invest on it.

On that note, PhilCare recently introduced a total wellness program – the PhilCare 360. For more info, visit their website 🙂

Thank you to our new friends at PhilCare for sending over a PhilCare Wellness Box and reminding me to be proactive in taking care of myself! A jumping rope to start my day with, moringga tea to alternate with my green tea, calamansi and oatmeal soap to take care of my skin, and . As an added bonus, they included a card that I can use for an electrocardiogram (ECG), lipid profile and one Internal Medicine consult in PhilCare branches locared in Makati, Manila and Quezon City. <3

Spa Review: Juicy Nails by K2C

By on October 30, 2014

How often do you go to a spa? At least once a month, I go in for a body scrub and massage. I never bothered before but now I use it as an excuse to take a break and reward myself. Whether for health or self-indulgence, I noticed there is an increasing number of spas as well as people who visit them. Is our lives that stressful?

One afternoon I was invited with a fellow blogger to try out a newly opened spa on the northern part of Quezon City. The establishment is called Juicy Nails by K2C and it offers nails, body and wax spa services. Owned by spa goers themselves, Ms. Kathy and Ms. Carol, the location was chosen because it was ideal for them to meet halfway.

The spa has six (6) comfy chairs, two (2) therapy rooms and a spotless bathroom with shower. A dash of vibrant pink, purple, light blue and white on the walls and furniture might intimidate macho men but the spa caters to everyone. A collection of nail polishes are beautifully displayed on the wall behind the counter. Guests are offered water, hot tea or iced tea on arrival.

The rooms were separated by a thick curtain. There were times the ‘divider’ was moved. Only clad in our underwear, the therapists did make sure we are covered in the right places all the time.

Bed was covered with plastic to keep it dry.

My therapist chose my body ritual, Citrus Glow, a whitening body scrub and wrap. My body was brushed to open my pores, scrubbed down, and wiped clean with warm water. Then mask was applied, body was wrapped with the plastic bed cover, and wiped clean with a cleanser. I was escorted to their bathroom for a quick shower before a body massage.

The treatment made me skin smooth and smelling good, no doubt about that. It would have been nice if the therapist asked me first what specific body ritual I wanted to try. I’m curious about the weight loss one, nonetheless I’m glad she is concerned in making my skin tone even.

If you’re into hard massages, you’ll enjoy the ones they give at Juicy Nails by K2C. Unfortunately, my body does not. Even after advising the therapist and adjusting the pressure, it left me with back pains when I got home 🙁

Their therapists are polite and accommodating with my questions. Cleanliness is a priority, especially in their shower / restroom area. If you’re residing or working near Tandang Sora market and looking for reasonably priced and good spa services, best for intimate spa parties, drop by Juicy Nails by K2C. Thank you Ms. Kathy and Ms. Carol for accommodating us!

Sharp’s PCI Technology enhances indoor air quality while removing viruses

By on October 23, 2014

While it is true that the air we breathe outsider our home is largely out of our control, we cannot say the same thing about indoor air. We spend the majority of our time indoors, and yet we rarely think twice about the air we breathe inside. Indoor air quality is just as crucial to our wellbeing as any other environmental factors. The accumulation of dust, molds, and other gases that are emitted by everyday household activities can lead to poor indoor air quality – and you may not even be aware of it. As a result, you or those living with you can suffer ailments such as headaches, eye irritation, allergies and respiratory diseases.

The Search for 2015 Ten Outstanding Young Mathematicians is On!

By on October 22, 2014

Math skills is crucial for a wide array of analytical, technological, scientific, and economic applications. People cringe when they have to deal with numbers, formulas, and finding the value of x. I don’t. I used to spend part of my Saturdays attending MTAP classes during grade school and high school, which was a lot of fun to me. I challenge myself to compute manually unless I really need to use a scientific calculator. Having one in hand does make our life a lot easier, especially in Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics, Accounting and other similar classes.

It saddens me that the our country has only been ranked 96th out of 142 countries in perceived quality of Mathematics and Science education. This is according to the latest World Economic Forum WEF Global Competitiveness Report (2013-2014). It is said to be a considerable improvement from being ranked 115th (WEF 2011-2012). However, we’re still lagging behind our neighboring countries, where Singapore continues to be on top of the list.

In an effort to uplift the status of mathematics in society and recognize the extraordinary math skills of today’s youth, Sharp Calculators partners with Department of Education – National Capital Region (DepEd-NCR), Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines (MTG), Mathematics Society of the Philippines (MSP) and Philippine Council of Mathematics Educators Inc. (MathTEd) as it launches the very first search for the TEN OUTSTANDING YOUNG MATHEMATICIANS (TOYM) from National Capital Region.

Print

Nomination Mechanics

  1. The search is open to all public and private high school students in the National Capital Region who have completed at least two (2) years of high school. They must be a Filipino citizen, either naturalized or born.
  2. The nominee must be among the top 3 students in math as certified by the school principal.
  3. The award will be based primarily on the nominee’s performance on national and international competition. These competitions must be recognized by the Department of Education or Department of Science and Technology.
  4. Presentations or publications of original work in mathematics are desirable.
  5. Students who contribute to the promotion of mathematics and show leadership skills are desirable. Good moral character will be considered.

Criteria for Judging

  • Performance in Mathematics Competitions – 75%
  • Research and Publications in Mathematics – 10%
  • Leadership and Promotion of Mathematics – 15 %

Screening Process

Judging will be based on a recommendation from school principal / Mathematics head with supporting documents. For students who are chosen to the top 20, each involvement on activities included in the recommendation of the principal/math head or other recognized authority will be reviewed and assessed by judges/co-presenters. The said recommendations will be one of the bases of the judges’ questions for the panel interview.

Representatives from the Department of Education NCR, DOST-SEI, MTG Philippines, MSP, and MathTed will conduct the deliberation / final interview of finalists.

These Ten Outstanding Young Mathematician awardees will be receiving a plaque of excellence, cash prizes and gifts from Sharp Calculators and sponsors. They will also serve as the first batch of Sharp Calculators’ Youth Ambassadors who will inspire and encourage the Filipino youth through school tours and mathematics symposiums.

If you know a deserving student, get a nomination kits at any National Book Store NCR branches or download it through www.sharpminds.ph. Deadline for nominations will be on January 5, 2015. The awarding ceremonies is scheduled on February 2015.

For more information contact Sharp Calculators at 681-6161 / 646-2867 and look for Ms. Mary Rose Rocha or Ms. Clara Camille Ocampo.
