The Search for 2015 Ten Outstanding Young Mathematicians is On!

By on October 22, 2014

Math skills is crucial for a wide array of analytical, technological, scientific, and economic applications. People cringe when they have to deal with numbers, formulas, and finding the value of x. I don’t. I used to spend part of my Saturdays attending MTAP classes during grade school and high school, which was a lot of fun to me. I challenge myself to compute manually unless I really need to use a scientific calculator. Having one in hand does make our life a lot easier, especially in Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics, Accounting and other similar classes.

It saddens me that the our country has only been ranked 96th out of 142 countries in perceived quality of Mathematics and Science education. This is according to the latest World Economic Forum WEF Global Competitiveness Report (2013-2014). It is said to be a considerable improvement from being ranked 115th (WEF 2011-2012). However, we’re still lagging behind our neighboring countries, where Singapore continues to be on top of the list.

In an effort to uplift the status of mathematics in society and recognize the extraordinary math skills of today’s youth, Sharp Calculators partners with Department of Education – National Capital Region (DepEd-NCR), Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines (MTG), Mathematics Society of the Philippines (MSP) and Philippine Council of Mathematics Educators Inc. (MathTEd) as it launches the very first search for the TEN OUTSTANDING YOUNG MATHEMATICIANS (TOYM) from National Capital Region.

Print

Nomination Mechanics

  1. The search is open to all public and private high school students in the National Capital Region who have completed at least two (2) years of high school. They must be a Filipino citizen, either naturalized or born.
  2. The nominee must be among the top 3 students in math as certified by the school principal.
  3. The award will be based primarily on the nominee’s performance on national and international competition. These competitions must be recognized by the Department of Education or Department of Science and Technology.
  4. Presentations or publications of original work in mathematics are desirable.
  5. Students who contribute to the promotion of mathematics and show leadership skills are desirable. Good moral character will be considered.

Criteria for Judging

  • Performance in Mathematics Competitions – 75%
  • Research and Publications in Mathematics – 10%
  • Leadership and Promotion of Mathematics – 15 %

Screening Process

Judging will be based on a recommendation from school principal / Mathematics head with supporting documents. For students who are chosen to the top 20, each involvement on activities included in the recommendation of the principal/math head or other recognized authority will be reviewed and assessed by judges/co-presenters. The said recommendations will be one of the bases of the judges’ questions for the panel interview.

Representatives from the Department of Education NCR, DOST-SEI, MTG Philippines, MSP, and MathTed will conduct the deliberation / final interview of finalists.

These Ten Outstanding Young Mathematician awardees will be receiving a plaque of excellence, cash prizes and gifts from Sharp Calculators and sponsors. They will also serve as the first batch of Sharp Calculators’ Youth Ambassadors who will inspire and encourage the Filipino youth through school tours and mathematics symposiums.

If you know a deserving student, get a nomination kits at any National Book Store NCR branches or download it through www.sharpminds.ph. Deadline for nominations will be on January 5, 2015. The awarding ceremonies is scheduled on February 2015.

For more information contact Sharp Calculators at 681-6161 / 646-2867 and look for Ms. Mary Rose Rocha or Ms. Clara Camille Ocampo.

The students vying for a slot at her firm are played by Alfred Enoch (Wes Gibbins), Aja Naomi King (Michaela Pratt), Jack Falahee (Connor Walsh), Karla Souza (Laurel Castillo) and Matt McGorry (Asher Millstone).

McCord’s team includes her Chief of Staff Nadine Tolliver (Bebe Neuwirth), speechwriter Matt Mahoney (Geoffrey Arend), press coordinator Daisy Grant (Patina Miller) and her charming assistant Blake Moran (Erich Bergen).

Political drama Madam Secretary premieres on October 16 at 9:05PM PHT, first and exclusive on Sony Channel.

Manhattan Love Story

sony-channel-manhattan-love-storyDo you agree that “the only way to maintain relationships — with lovers, spouses, family, co-workers, or friends — is to keep most of our thoughts to ourselves?”

A new romantic comedy, Manhattan Love Story, is based on that simple premise. Follow the story of Dana (Analeigh Tipton) and Peter (Jake McDorman) on their journey through complicated, modern-day relationships. No single inner thought is spared as you will hear them, highlighting the differences between men and women in dating and what one is actually thinking while they’re saying something.

Manhattan Love Story premieres on October 19 at 10PM PHT, first and exclusive on Sony Channel.

Other exciting shows

These series will join a variety of popular returning programs on Sony Channel, including pulsating medical drama “The Night Shift,” starring Eoin Macken (“Merlin”), which debuted as the top scripted series last summer in the U.S.; musical drama “Nashville,” which follows the struggles of the fading queen of country music and a rising young star respectively played by Emmy-nominated Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights”) and Golden Globe-nominated Hayden Panettiere (“Heroes”); along with reality competition “Cupcake Wars” and dating series “The Millionaire Matchmaker.”

Fresh, confident and stylish, with a dash of clever wit, Sony Channel is visually stunning with a brand identity that perfectly complements its line-up of high calibre programming. How To Get Away With Murder premieres on Sony Channel

By on October 15, 2014

It’s your first day in law school and your classroom is buzzing with excitement and anxiety. Your professor then walks in with a speech that will change your life. Welcome.

“I don’t know what terrible things you’ve done in your life up to this point, but clearly your karma’s out of balance to get assigned my class. I’m Professor Annalise Keating and this is Criminal Law 100, or as I prefer to call it, How to Get Away with Murder.”

image

Attention Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal fans! Get ready for the most anticipated new US legal drama coming at your TV screens! Academy-Award nominee Viola Davis stars as a badass litigator and criminal law professor. Her teaching method is on a practical level, where she brings the students along on crime scenes to courtrooms. The best ones  get the chance to join her firm, alongside two associates. If there’s anything that I can say at this point, Keating’s character is reminiscent of Grey’s Dr. Miranda Bailey. And oh, they will do everything to prove their clients are not guilty. Everything.

Did you catch the double episode premiere of “How To Get Away With Murder” last October 15, 9:05pm on Sony Channel? Make it your new TV obsession every Wednesday night!

Sony Channel is seen on SKYCable Channel 35, Cignal Digital TV Channel 60, Destiny Cable Channel 62, Cable Link Channel 39.

Playtime, Funtime: The Top 5 Benefits of Playing

By on

Maybe you thought it was just for fun, or just to keep your little ones busy, but no, never underestimate child’s play. Playing with toys may look like for mere leisure only, or even just wasting time, but actually when children are playing house or fighting imaginary villains, they’re essentially developing crucial life skills. Yes, those little moments with their robots and dolls are actually preparing them for the challenges that they will face once they reach adulthood.

But with the advent of tablets, mobile phones, and other devices, traditional playtime has been shrinking. So before it’s too late, take the plug off, turn that gadget off, and check out these five scientific benefits of play. Yes, you’re welcome.

  • Better Behavior – According to a 2009 study in the journal Pediatrics, kids behave better in the classroom when they have the chance to play on the playground during the day. Comparing teachers’ ratings of 8 and 9-year-olds’ behavior in schools with and without recess periods, kids who had more than 15 minutes a day of breaks behaved better during academic time. So let your child take that much-needed break in between study time. Let them run, jump, tinker with their toys; break time serves as a refresh button for them to restart with enthusiasm and energy.
  • All For One, One For All – Playing teaches kids to interact, and yes, play nice. According to a research published in the Early Childhood Education Journal in 2007, playing with others help kids learn awareness of other people’s feelings. Playing also teaches kids to handle their own emotions, a skill that is definitely needed as they move through with life. Socializing, interacting, reacting, yes, those are some skills that playing with dolls, playing on the playground, and more, brings.

  • Let’s Get Physical – Obviously, unlike watching television and playing computer games, playing with toys get your kids moving. It is recommended that children (as well as adults) engage in at least an hour a day of physical activity. The American Heart Association says that active children grow into active adults, thus decreasing their risk of having heart diseases or any other diseases for that matter. Playing gets their blood pumping, their muscles burning, their unwanted fat burning, their mind moving—making them a healthier kid, and definitely, a healthier adult in the future.

Source: Flickr
  • Achievement Unlocked Through Experiences– A 2009 Journal of School Health Study found that the more physical activity tests children pass, the more they do well on the academic tests. Yes, indeed, kids learn to count by playing hopscotch, they learn balance and all through building blocks, they learn their nurturing skills through playing dolls, they learn the good and the bad when playing with their superhero figurines.
  • Endorphins Educates – Who would want to work, and work, and work all the time? All work and no play will make your little ones sad and stressed. Moving releases endorphins, which are also known as happy hormones, bringing your kids into that good, happy mood. Let your little ones dance under the rain, play dress up along with their dolls, pretend to be a race car driver with their toy cars, spend an afternoon on the playground, and so much more! Their joyful mood will brighten up everyone’s day for sure!

Yes, experience really is the best teacher. Do not box your child and stop them from exploring the world—let them play, let them meet new playmates, let their imaginations run wild with their toys. When they don’t feel tied up, they are more likely to develop skills that are essential as they grow up—curiosity, creativity, and so much more! Let them discover the world, let them get dirty and let them learn on their own. Don’t let them get wired to gadgets and computers—push them into the real world where they’ll learn to respond and react real!

If you have any other ideas, just drop a comment about it and let’s start the conversation. Now, who’s up for playtime?

The Medical City brings technology and expertise closer to local healthcare industry

By on September 30, 2014

I’m a fan of American medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Most of the time I do not understand the jargon thrown here and there but their actions make me understand what they’re about to do. I supposed it’s not a direct reflection of what happens in a hospital but to see the characters recognized for their skills and research.. do our medial practitioners also get the same exposure to advanced technologies and mentorship?

Through our friends at AMPR, my question was answered. I was able to be part of the launch of a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary training center by premier health institution, The Medical City (TMC). The Center for Advanced Skills, Simulation and Training Innovation, otherwise known as CASSTI, provides a controlled and safe environment for skills acquisition. It is headed by Dr. Deogracias Alberto G. Reyes, TMC surgeon and associate professor at the Ateneo School of Medical. According to him,

“CASSTI was brought about by the need to effect a change in medical and surgical training. The traditional Halsteadian mindset of ‘see one, do one, teach one’ is not ideal as it does not give the trainee the opportunity to achieve mastery before patient contact.”

TMC President and CEO Dr. Alfredo R.A. Bengzon adds that “this offers physicians and trainees the ability to assess and achieve proficiency through simulation and an ideal learning environment that is pace appropriate and structured with expert supervision.”

The main feature of CASSTI is simulation training, where technical errors do not have clinical consequences and do not involve morbidity or mortality. The ability to repeat and train in the skills laboratory makes training pace appropriate, responsive to the individual’s learning aptitudes and schedule limitations.

TMC-CASSTI

Ribbon cutting, blessing and tour of the CASSTI facility was followed by a short program at the Augusto M. Barcelon Auditorium.

Dr. Salud (Head, Department of Surgery) gave the welcome remarks, Dr. Sarmiento (Chairman of the Board, PSI-The Medical City) gave his prefatory remarks, followed by a messaged from the President & CEO Dr. Bengzon, a message from the CASSTI Consultant Director Dr. Reyes, a message from the Guest of Honor Prof. Sir Alfred Cuschieri and closing remarks by Dr. Ramos.

L-R: Dr. Alfredo R.A. Bengzon | Dr. Deogracias Alberto G. Reyes | Prof, Sir Alfred Cuschieri | Dr. Eugenio Jose F. Ramos | Dr. Augusto P. Sarmiento | Dr. Jose Antonio M. Salud

Facilities

CASSTI’s facilities include endoscopic stations, virtual reality, roo, simulation room, teleconference ability for live surgery transmission to CASSTI and remote locations, animal laboratory, lecture rooms, video editing stations, and a research room.

Courses Offered

Healthcare professionals who desire to strengthen and refine their clinical and surgical skills are welcome to enroll in CASSTI courses. List of short 1 to 5-days clinical courses:

  • General Surgery – Minimal Access Surgery: Fundamental Knowledge and Skills, Mastery of Laparoscopic Suturing Course, Essentials of Laparoscopic Hernia Repair Course, Laparoscopic Appendectomy Course, Laparoscopic IOC and Choledochoscopy Course, Simbionix – LapMentor VR Simulator Course
  • Colorectal Surgery – Stapling Workshop in Colorectal Surgery, Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery, Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) for Rectal Cancer, Hemorrhoidal Master Class
  • Head and Neck Surgery – Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) Course, Phonosurgery (Laryngology) Course, Basic Facial Plastic Course, Pediatric Airway Endoscopy Course (Pediatric Otolaryngology), Ultrasound Guided Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) of the Head and Neck, Temporal Bone Dissection Course
  • Breast Surgery – Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy Workshop
  • Orthopedics – Basic Knee Arthroscopy, Therapeutic Arthroscopy of the Knee, Surgical Approaches to the Hip
  • Urology – Intensive Laparoscopic Nephrectomy Course
  • Gynecology – Hysteroscopy Course
  • Airway Management – Critical Airway Management: In a Training Institution
  • Critical Care – Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC), Basic Clinical Skills

The facility also offers short technical courses in Instrument Reprocessing and Maintenance (1 day) and Operative Nursing in Minimal Access Surgery (1.5 days). Plans to offer a Certificate / Diploma course and Masters Degree in Minimal Access Surgery are underway as of this writing.

I believe trainings like these are worth the investment, especially in the field of health care where one’s life is on the line.

CASSTI is located at the lower ground of The Medical City in Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City. For inquiries, you may call 998-1000 or 988-700 ext. 6801 or email at mail@themedicalcity.com or visit www.themedicalcity.com. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

Filipino investors optimistic on pensions, but based on some risky assumptions – Manulife Survey

By on

The majority of Filipino investors are satisfied with their government pension – but that sentiment is based on specific assumptions and a cash-dominant approach to retirement working out, according to the latest Manulife Investor Sentiment Index.*

Two-thirds of respondents said that they are confident that their government pension would be enough to meet their needs upon retirement – the highest level of all surveyed markets. In contrast, across all surveyed markets the proportion of confident investors was less than 40 percent, and as low as one-in-ten in some markets.

While such optimism seems positive, the survey shows it is based on some risky assumptions. First, investors expect their retirement income to be relatively high, at 92% of their current income – the highest estimate among all surveyed markets (Asia average 69%). Second, they expect their retirement expenses to be relatively low, at just 61 percent of their current income, at the lower end of surveyed markets (Asia average 66%). Third, nearly all (95%) said that in retirement they expect to rely on private healthcare – by contrast, in every other market only a minority expected to rely on private healthcare (Asia average 38%).

“Filipino investors have high estimates of their retirement income. Even if these turn out to be right, they may not be enough to cover their actual costs,” said Ryan Charland, CEO of Manulife Philippines. “Today, people generally expect their retirement to be active, and that means expenses will likely be much higher than what many realize. In addition, healthcare tends to cost a lot more than people expect. In Asia healthcare costs have risen about twice the rate of inflation over the past 10 years. Of course, it’s even more expensive if you go private.”

The survey highlights that Filipino investors have a high degree of reliance on their government pension, with only one in five owning an additional, private pension plan. Instead, many expect to fall back on other, less assured, largely cash-forms of income, notably savings (which they expect to make up 37% of their retirement income) and inheritance (12% of their retirement income) – in both cases the highest reliance of any surveyed markets. This cash-dominant approach to retirement is reinforced by the finding that, on receiving their pension, Philippine investors plan to deposit nearly half into the bank, the second-highest level of all markets (Asia average 35%).

“We know that Filipino investors like to hold cash and are among the most cash-heavy investors in Asia. The latest survey shows us they also plan to be Asia’s most cash-reliant investors when retired,” said Mr. Charland. “Keeping cash in the bank provides minimal returns, which may not even keep up with inflation. Their retirement optimism would have a sounder basis with a more balanced portfolio, especially given that retirement today can last 30 years or more.”

*About Manulife Investor Sentiment Index in Asia
Manulife’s Investor Sentiment Index in Asia is a quarterly, proprietary survey measuring and tracking investors’ views across eight markets in the region on their attitudes towards key asset classes and related issues. The Index is calculated as a net score (% of “Very good time” and “Good time” minus % of “Bad time” and “Very bad time”) for each asset class. The overall index is calculated as an average of the index figures of asset classes. A positive number means a positive sentiment, zero means a neutral sentiment, and a negative number means negative sentiment.

The Manulife ISI is based on 500 online interviews in each market of Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan, and Singapore; in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines it is conducted face-to-face. Respondents are middle class to affluent investors, aged 25 years and above who are the primary decision maker of financial matters in the household and currently have investment products.

The Manulife ISI is a long-established research series in North America. The Manulife ISI has been measuring investor sentiment in Canada for the past 15 years, and extended this to its John Hancock operation in the U.S. in 2011. Asset classes taken into Manulife ISI Asia calculations are stocks/equities, real estate (primary residence and other investment properties), mutual funds/unit trusts, fixed income investment and cash.
